Mission Year is a yearlong urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. The program places people in urban settings with the purpose to serve the communities around them while learning what it means to follow Christ’s greatest commandments to “Love the Lord your God” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” At the same time we will be learning what it means to live a life of simplicity.
My husband and I have been placed in an area of Atlanta called Peoplestown with one other married couple. We are all living in a two bedroom apartment on part of the grounds of an organization called Emmaus House. We have quickly discovered that our location has provided us with great access to meeting people since Emmaus House has been here since 1967. (www.emmaushouse.org)
During the week we have the chance to serve at organizations in the community. I am working with Emmaus House doing health education programs for their senior outreach program, and I am helping match people with proper health resources at the poverty rights office. Josh is at Sullivan Center where he is helping set up a program for the organization to provide further rent and financial assistance than they have in the past.
We need to raise $24,000 to cover the cost of living, food, transportation, and trainings. You can go to www.missionyear.org/support/westover and donate. Our fund number is 11-9015.
